TikTok Shop has officially been live in Belgium since 15 June 2026. The "discovery commerce" platform already reaches 4.3 million monthly active users in the country, more than one in three residents. Here's what this launch actually changes for Belgian SMEs, and how to approach it without rushing in.
1. A Belgian launch in Europe's last expansion wave
Belgium joins the Netherlands, Sweden and Hungary in the fourth wave of TikTok Shop's European rollout, after the UK (2021), Ireland and Spain (2024), then Germany, France and Italy (March 2025). The principle: instead of consumers searching for a product on Google or Amazon, the product finds the buyer, through TikTok's recommendation algorithm. Three formats drive this model: shoppable videos, where a tagged product in a short video can be bought in a few taps, live shopping, the most engaging format, and an integrated product showcase on the brand's profile.
2. Global growth that explains why Belgium matters
TikTok Shop's gross merchandise value (GMV) grew from roughly $1 billion in 2021 to $33.2 billion in 2024, with a projected $66 billion in 2025, nearly doubling in a single year. By late 2025, the platform claimed 400 million active consumers worldwide and ranked as the world's 5th largest marketplace, behind Amazon, Walmart, Shopee and eBay. In the UK, the first European market to open in 2021, more than 200,000 businesses were already active by late 2024, doubling in a year, with daily live shopping sessions up 64%.
3. What the new seller rules mean for Belgian SMEs
To open a shop, a seller needs at least 1,000 followers, a business entity and stock located in the European Union, and must pass a verification of professional and financial documents. A performance score, based on logistics, customer service and reviews, then determines whether the shop stays open: below a certain threshold, TikTok closes it. On consumer rights, Belgium's Code of Economic Law applies in full to sales made through social media: seller identification, a 14-day right of withdrawal, a 2-year legal warranty. The "Sell Across Europe" feature, expected shortly after launch, will let Belgian sellers reach the other European markets already open.
The AI angle, humans first
TikTok's recommendation algorithm, itself AI-driven, doesn't favour the biggest ad budget but the most engaging content. A Belgian SME with a relevant video can reach as many people as an international player. But an algorithm decides neither brand tone, nor editorial calendar, nor consistency with the rest of a digital strategy: AI executes. Expertise decides, and watches.
This week's action
Check whether your products suit demonstrative video content (before/after, testing, unboxing), and assess whether the 1,000-follower TikTok threshold is realistically reachable before considering opening a shop.
Vistalaro Reach designs and runs your social ad campaigns on the platforms that matter for your business, TikTok included, betting on content that performs rather than media budget alone. Vistalaro Build then makes sure your site and e-commerce processes stay compliant, beyond the social media storefront.
